Überblick : Im Jahre 1898 schickt Spanien ein Militärkommando in die Stadt Baler, Philippinen, um eine der letzten Kolonien des spanischen Reiches vor rebellische Eingeborene zu schützen und deren Wiederherstellung ihrer alten Territorien zu vermeiden. Geleitet von Kapitän Enrique de las Morenas und Leutnant Cerezo werden die Soldaten bei Nacht von den Rebellen angegriffen und sind gezwungen, Unterschlupf in der Kirche des Priesters von Baler, Fray Carmelo, zu suchen. Die tapferen Soldaten versuchen die Kirche in eine militärische Festung zu verwandelt, wobei ihnen die unerbittliche Hitze und die Malaria massiv zu schaffen machen. Nach dem krankheitsbedingten Tod des Kapitäns übernimmt Cerezo die Führungsposition, wobei er einem ständigen Machtkampf mit Jimeno, einem Soldat aus dem ursprünglichen Kader, ausgesetzt ist. Cerezo, welcher bereits vollkommen der Idee des Sieges verfallen ist, erfährt jedoch, dass Spanien die Philippinen bereits an die USA verkauft hat...
